The Mark of the Beast

My Mom has always been into Jesus. Every Sunday we attended church at the local First Christian. Dad stayed home to work on the car. I found church and Jesus really confusing. They talked a lot about love and forgiveness, but they also talked a lot about Hell and something called "The Rapture". I always thought it sounded scary but when the pastor talked about it he made it sound like something to look forward to, like a trip to Disneyland. All I understood was that it involved something called "The Mark of the Beast" and that did not sound like something to look forward to. There were no rides at Disneyland with names like that.

One year when I was around 9 we had to go to church on Sunday night. My mom said we were going to see a movie about "The Rapture". I was a little nervous but too young to stay home alone so I had no choice but to go. I will never forget the lead girl, she had long straight brown hair parted in the middle. Her best friend had fluffy blond hair like my mom's. People disappeared, the good people, and all the rest of the people had to make this big choice. The brown-haired girl wasn't sure what to choose. The blond girl made her choice and they led her away to a guillotine. They put her head on the block and then they showed the brown-haired girl's face while the blade dropped.  She put her hands up to her mouth in horror.

That was when I took my exit. I snuck out the back and into the room where they stored the little clear plastic cups filled with grape juice. I threw back as many as I could, like shots of whisky.

That movie was called "A Distant Thunder" and it warped me for years until I finally broke free of it as an adult.

The only part of the movie I remember fondly was when, post-rapture, the main character meets a hippy looking sort of guy.

I was a little older, so I guess the name stuck with me.

I'd be willing to watch it if:

* I didn't have to pay for it (rental would be OK)

* I could get drunk in the process

Oh I was going to say that-'A Distant Thunder' that was the movie. It was a follow up to a movie called 'A Thief in the Night'.

I am glad you didn't see the first one!

The girl with the long brown hair is a singer and formed a xian rock band called Resurrection ( or Rez) Band. I had their records.
